Complex Networks Accessibility and Symmetry (preprint)

Abstract

In this paper, we present the implementation of a Python library to calculate symmetry, accessibility, and generalized accessibility, measures that are used to characterize the topological properties of complex network nodes. The software is written as a Python C extension and provides both a fast implementation and user friendly API. In order to illustrate the use of the implemented resources, we present some applications. First, we show that accessibility can grasp information regarding the borders of the networks. Then, we illustrate that in a specific geographical network, the four considered measures are relatively little correlated among themselves, with some exceptions. To conclude, we compared the implemented measures and found that for a specific set of real-world networks covering different types, the symmetry measurements tended to yield more distinct characterizations.
